Prof. Chitta Baral Proposed State Govt. to Upgrade VSSUT to an IIEST during 12th Plan
Comments Off, MessageBoard, UCE in the News, by rmohanty_bgr.Prof. Chitta Baral feels that Odisha should demand that the Central Government to establish Indian School of Mines, Environment and Sustainability (modeled after ISMU or a significant branch of it) in these states (Odisha, Chhatisgarh, etc.) in areas which are close to needed infrastructure (100-150 km of an airport etc.) and are also close to mining and post-mining industrial activities.
Such locations in Odisha include (a) Kalinganagar (b) Jharsuguda-Sundergarh and (c) Angul-Talcher.
Odisha’s demand Number Two: Upgrading VSSUT (Vir Surendra Sai University of Technology) to an IIEST (Indian Institute of Engineering Science & Technology).
The Union Government had identified the upgradation of several technical institutions.
Among those short-listed Bengal Engineering and Science University (Horwah) has been approved by the cabinet for upgradation to an IIEST; IT-BHU is being made to an IIT; and the upgradation of the others (CUSAT Kerala; College of Engineering, Andhra University; and College of Engineering, Osmania University) are in limbo because of the corresponding State Governments not fully supporting it.
The concept behind IIESTs (Indian Institutes of Engineering Science & Technology), namely merging science and technology education, is a good and timely one and we request that several other technical institutions across the country, including VSSUT Burla in Odisha, be upgraded to IIESTs (Indian Institute of Engineering Science & Technology).
Since then major improvements have been made to UCE Burla, starting with it being made to a unitary university called VSSUT (Vir Surendra Sai University of Technology) and almost doubling of its faculty positions with a major faculty hiring drive in progress.
The Odisha Government is willing to handover VSSUT to the center for upgradation to an IIEST with similar provisions as IIEST Howrah (upgraded from BESU); namely 50% students from the state and 50% from across India.
Odisha’s demand Number Three: Campus of Benaras Hindu University (BHU) in Puri and the other dhams.
Educationists feel that Dr.Kumar, known for his genuine interest for the state, will take up these issues in the forum of Planning Commission, when he presents the Odisha Road Map on Higher and Technical Education.
